01 / PE tarpaulin — lightweight, practical protection
PE tarpaulin is woven polyethylene with laminated surfaces, widely used for temporary stock covers, construction-material protection, agriculture and general outdoor covering. It is often selected where manageable weight and an economical covering area matter. The finished product can include reinforced hems, rope edges and eyelets, with the construction agreed for its intended use.
Common PE tarpaulin enquiries include 120, 160, 180, 200 and 250 GSM. Blue/silver and orange/silver are among the colour combinations customers request, with availability confirmed for the selected grade. A higher GSM means more mass per square metre; it does not, on its own, establish a service-life or wind-resistance rating. Compare the weave, lamination, UV specification and finishing as well as the weight.
For a waterproof PE tarpaulin in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi, state the finished dimensions and how the sheet will be supported and tied. Seams, punctures and water pockets can affect rain protection. A stock cover that is opened daily needs different handling details from a sheet fitted temporarily over building materials. 02 / PVC tarpaulin — custom welded, reusable covers
PVC tarpaulin normally combines a woven polyester base with a polyvinyl chloride coating. This creates a flexible coated fabric that can be cut and joined into flat sheets, truck covers, machinery covers, curtains and removable industrial panels. Compatible PVC fabrics can be heat welded, allowing large covers to be assembled from roll material with planned joints and reinforced edges.
Our PVC enquiries commonly range from 300 to 900 GSM, including 500, 650, 700, 750, 850 and 900 GSM. Colours such as blue, grey, orange, white and beige are confirmed against the grade and availability. Choose the material from its technical properties and intended use, rather than assuming every fabric at the same GSM has equal strength. For large covers, consider the finished handling weight as well as the required protection.

03 / Canvas tarpaulin — woven covers made to fit
Canvas tarpaulin is a woven textile, commonly cotton or a blend, that can be sewn into protective covers, cargo sheets and workshop curtains. It is chosen for its textile feel and handling characteristics, and for applications where the breathability of the selected construction is useful. Water resistance and moisture movement depend on the weave and treatment, so those properties must be checked for the actual fabric.
Canvas enquiries often describe weight in ounces per square yard. For comparison, 18 oz per square yard is approximately 610 GSM, while 25 oz is approximately 848 GSM. Confirm whether the stated weight includes treatment. The finished cover weighs more than the plain fabric area because seams, hems and accessories add material. Industrial stitching, reinforced corners, webbing and suitable eyelets can be included in the agreed construction.
For canvas tarpaulin in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, explain whether the cover will be used outdoors, under a shelter or inside a workshop. Include dimensions and photographs for a fitted machinery cover. Canvas is not automatically waterproof or fire-retardant, and heavy treatments may reduce breathability. 04 / Fire-retardant tarpaulin — specify the documented grade
Fire-retardant tarpaulin is formulated or treated to achieve a specified reaction-to-fire performance. FR PVC is a specialist grade within the coated-fabric family, rather than a completely separate base material. The important distinction is the documented product performance: colour, thickness and GSM alone cannot prove a fire classification. An orange sheet should never be assumed to be fire-retardant simply because of its appearance.
Enquiries can include lightweight FR PVC or heavier grades, with the proposed product selected against the project’s actual requirement. Send the relevant technical clause and identify the test report or classification requested by the approving party. The document should relate to the material being offered, including applicable variations and limitations. Anti-static behaviour is a separate property and also needs evidence where required.
Fire-retardant does not mean fireproof. A general FR tarpaulin is not automatically a welding blanket, direct-contact heat barrier or a fire-resisting enclosure. Specialist hot-work applications need their own product assessment. Which tarpaulin is right for your job?
Difference between PVC and PE tarpaulin
PVC tarpaulin is generally polyester fabric coated with PVC; PE tarpaulin is normally woven polyethylene with laminated surfaces. PE is often practical for economical temporary protection and lower handling weight. PVC is often selected for reusable fabricated covers and welded joints. These are general purchasing patterns, not a guarantee that one material always outperforms the other.
Compare the complete specification: fabric grade, nominal GSM, tear and tensile data where available, seam method, reinforcement and fixing details. A light stock cover and a daily-use truck sheet perform different jobs. Choose the material that suits your exposure and handling, then confirm the finished dimensions and accessories.
Difference between canvas and PVC tarpaulin
Canvas is a woven textile that is usually sewn, while compatible PVC-coated fabric can be heat welded. PVC offers a coated surface that is useful for cleaning and rain exclusion. Some canvas grades provide useful breathability, but waterproofing treatments can alter this property. Neither material alone solves condensation beneath a cover.
Choose canvas when the properties of the selected textile suit the equipment and storage conditions. Consider PVC where a smooth coated surface, welded panels or a fitted reusable cover is preferred. Compare dry handling weight, care requirements and the effects of outdoor exposure before ordering.
Difference between standard PVC and fire-retardant PVC
The distinction is documented fire performance. Standard PVC must not be substituted for an FR grade merely because it has the same colour or GSM. Ask for the actual product reference and relevant test documentation. Fire-retardant describes behaviour under specified conditions; it does not mean fireproof or establish a fire-resistance rating for an entire structure. Anti-static properties are separate and must also be checked when specified.
What is the difference between PE and canvas?
PE is a laminated plastic-based sheet, commonly chosen for lightweight temporary coverage. Canvas is a woven textile with different flexibility, surface feel and moisture behaviour. Its treatment affects water resistance and breathability. For temporary material storage, PE can be an economical option; for certain equipment or workshop covers, a correctly specified canvas may suit handling and storage needs. Compare the finished construction rather than judging by material name alone.

GSM, waterproofing and technical data
GSM means grams per square metre. It helps estimate fabric weight, but it is not a standalone strength rating. Thickness is a different measurement and cannot reliably be converted into GSM for a reinforced coated textile without construction information. A technical data sheet should identify the actual material, weight, tolerances and relevant properties. For a finished cover, also confirm seams, reinforcement, accessories and finished dimensions. A suitable waterproof sheet still needs correct drainage and protection from punctures.

What are the main types of tarpaulin?
